Suffield Coach's Commentary:

Whenever Coach Stanley's teams come to Suffield, you'd think that all he and I work on during practice is offense as both teams scored 23 goals this year and 29 goals a couple of years ago. That being said, Wednesday's game, while fun to watch and yes, it did have a lot of offense, had more than just scoring -- there were ground ball scrums, limited EMO opportunities, lots of back 'n' forth lacrosse, and in the end, a win for the Tigers. Kudos to the Wyverns for stepping off the bus ready to play hard.

In our 8 goal first quarter, things began KO's way as Suffield had trouble getting into a groove. Faceoffs were a draw as Hunter and Deane battled for every possession and Kingswood's offensive package initially stymied our typically reliable defense -- they made us somehow forget about second slides -- and while the Tigers did claw their way back to a 4-4 tie with some good decision-making of our own, clearly, the first quarter belonged to the Wyverns.

The second and third quarters saw each team have their moments, both offensively and defensively. Attack units were doing good things, midfield units were doing the best they could, but again, it was a draw by the time quater #4 began. Of note, at one point, Kingswood had a 10-6 lead heading into the last 1:30 of the third quarter before Suffield got two quick goals to narrow the lead to 10-8.

As the last 12 minutes began and some momentum (we hoped) on our side, every possession and every decision became crucial as both teams headed down the stretch. Kingswood battled, Suffield battled, and just about every player, whether they were playing or not, knew what was at stake. For the first three minutes, nothing happened that could have or would have changed the score until Peter Snedeker buried a shot with 9:27 left, but Kingswood still leads 10-9. This goal, however, gave new life to Suffield (and their crowd) as they ran off three more goals (Tyson, Schultz, Deane) in the next five minutes to go up 12-10. A late goal at 1:45 by Wheeler of Kingswood made it even more interesting heading into the last 1:30 of the game -- off a timeout, KO locked everyone off and made us earn it -- the Suffield Tigers were able to prevail in a hard fought battle from start to finish.

While many of the Tigers were not happy with their overall play, Kingswood deserves a ton of credit for preventing us from getting into a groove. As they always say, no one can be perfect in high school lacrosse, and while both Suffield and Kingswood each made their share of mistakes today, no one team made more than the other -- this game could have gone either way.

Suffield's Player of the Game:

Jake Deane, LSM/D
